To begin with, there are 3 stages in the UPSC Civil service examination which are as follows:

UPSC Prelims: The first stage of the UPSC exam cycle is the Preliminary exam. There are 2 papers, each containing a total of 100 and 80 objective–based questions respectively. Both the papers are of 2 hours each with 1/3rd negative marking.
UPSC Mains: The second stage is the Mains exam. There are a total of 9 papers and the exam is descriptive in nature. The time duration is 3 hours for each paper with no negative marking.
Personality Test: The final round is the Personal Interview which is conducted to assess the personality of the candidate.

The first stage of the UPSC CSE, that is the Prelims examination comprises of 2 papers, namely:

The General Studies (GS)
The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)
Talking briefly about both the papers, while the marks required to clear the GS Paper or Paper 1 is decided by the cutoff released by UPSC. The CSAT paper is qualifying in nature, as the minimum score required to clear the paper is 33% or 66 marks out of 200 marks.

Keeping in mind the UPSC Mains Syllabus 2024, let me discuss a few important points.

Now, there are a total of 9 papers in the UPSC syllabus for the Mains exam which includes 1 essay, 2 language papers, 4 General Studies papers and 2 optional papers with the time duration of 3 hours is provided to complete each paper.

Since the Mains exam is descriptive in nature, there is no provision of negative marking.

The UPSC syllabus 2024 for Essay in the Mains exam is not specifically defined. For this paper, you are expected to keep a close watch on the essay topic and to write your points in a concise manner.

You would need to write 2 essays from a list of given topics in the paper. The maximum marks allotted for this paper is 250 marks.

When I was 16, I landed a part-time position in the credit department of the Sears department store in my hometown. Over a late-night snack at the kitchen table, my father told me how pleased he was that a big company that would provide job security for the rest of my life had hired me. He saw the next 50 years of my life unfolding in that same department store until I reached retirement age and could exit, pension in hand. For his generation, that was successful career management.

The days of lifetime employment are gone for most of today’s workers and professionals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average length of time in a position is now three years and the average worker changes career fields completely at least three times in his or her lifetime. Some experts estimate that young workers entering the labor force today will have five or six distinctly different careers during their work life.

Career lattices have replaced career ladders. Rather than a linear progression from entry level to management, today’s careerists are moving sideways and even backward in order to gain the skills and experience needed to achieve their career goals.

New Realities of the Workforce

My father never expected his work life to provide personal fulfillment and satisfaction but my adult children and I do. He felt life began after 5:00 pm; we see work as consuming too much of our life for it to be anything less than gratifying.

Many employers now recognize that an 80-hour work-week does not produce the best results. Meanwhile, fewer workers are willing to sacrifice a balanced life—time for family, recreation, intellectual interests, hobbies, community service and personal growth—for the hope of promotion and business success.

I say, good for them; our communities will be better for their commitment to life-work balance!

Curiosity. Develop a strong curiosity about trends and developments in your career field. The Internet makes it easy to acquire information, but make sure you are using objective sources (not opinions and assumptions) and search multiple sites with different points of view to develop a comprehensive picture. Consider how trends in technology, population growth, emerging industries and social issues will impact your field in the short-term (3-5 years) and the longer term.

Skill-based Jobs. In his book, Re-Imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age, management guru Tom Peters describes a world where workers engage in sequential projects in which they learn skills that will further their careers while simultaneously creating value for their employers. These teams come together to produce a specific outcome; they share common goals, bring different skills, rely on collaboration and reduce the time required to complete the work. The team then disbands and new teams are configured for the next project.

Responsibility. Andy Grove, widely known as the CEO of Intel Corporation, told his employees that they, not the company, were responsible for their careers. While Intel provided tuition reimbursement and paid sabbaticals, Grove stood firm in his conviction that career management was an individual, not a corporate, responsibility and that promotions and significant projects would go to those actively engaged in developing their careers.

Emotional Intelligence. In the world of project work and personal responsibility for career management, everyone needs relationship skills. Much more than just staying connected on LinkedIn or Facebook or handing out business cards at networking events, emotional intelligence competencies include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management; these skills drive career success in today’s fast-paced and highly inter-dependent business world.

Support Team. The lifelong process of career management depends upon a strong career support team. You need at least three different kinds of expertise on your team: friends and family to provide encouragement, mentors for understanding the culture of the company and the requirements of the industry, and a Career Coach or Counselor for assessments, career plans and objective feedback.

Career opportunities are no longer an issue in the twenty first century. There are no limitations to what one can do. In fact, the basic challenge that one faces when making career decisions these days is to choose from the spectrum of career opportunities that are available these days. Gone are the times when one would think of medicine, education, government jobs etc. in terms of a career option. Career opportunities these days have taken leaps into some very unconventional and creative domains.

There has never been a dearth of dreamers. And with newer vistas opening up, everyone is working towards attaining the kind of career they have always dreamt of. However, before deciding upon any career, you must plan for it carefully. A self inventory helps an individual subject to decide better on what he is looking for in terms of his career. The world is also moving at a pace like never before. Under such circumstances, most people are considering issues like balancing their private and professional lives better. Therefore, when planning a career, consider your likes and dislikes. Make a list of what you are good, average and bad at. Introspection is always the first step to any form of career planning. Opportunities have never been so ripe. You need not stick to just one form of a conventional career any longer. If you are adventurous, you may consider a career in anything from trekking, mountain climbing, mountain biking or professional skiing. If you are into sports then there is so much to choose from. You can go carting, X-biking, rolling skating, figure skating, or play basketball, football, baseball, cricket, tennis. Do what you like best! And with growing opportunities, there is no shortage of adequate training. In fact, you may even choose to become a trainer. Dance your heart away, sing aloud, design apparels, create pieces of art. You may even choose career fields by merging two different professions. So, if you love to click pictures and have flair in writing, you may write for travel magazines. Or, if you love music and have a good sense of handling the camera, you may earn a good living out of recording musical performances.

There is a huge variety of career opportunities to choose from, you can even find appropriate resources and the required funding to pursue the career of your choice. So, if you have been working hard on you, waiting for the right opportunity to come your way, do not be surprised to be flooded with career opportunities!
